- it was written in AD 45, before the cancellor of Jerusalem in AD 50, James died in AD 65
- James 1:1, written to Jews scattered all over the world
- Old Testament: oil - to annoint (decrease)
- New Testament: Holy Spirit - to annoint (increase)
- indulgencies (Catholics sold holy water, rabins like forgiveness to the people but Martin Luther said that is by grace)
- grace-good works Gal 5:22 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith"
James versus Romans:
- James 1:2-3 "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temtations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience."
- Romans 5:3-5 "And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also, knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience. experience; and experience, hope; and hope maketh not ashamed: because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."
- glory-joy, tribulations-temptations, patience-patience
- tribulations - perseverence - patience - longsuffering - character - hope
- hope does not dissapoint
- Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
- faith is the substance of things hoped for
- if someone buys on-line an house in another country, he can't touch and be in it but he has title deads of the house (he paid for it). Now title deads are the substance of the house hoped for
- precious makes diamonds harder than stones
- James 1:19 "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."
- quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger = longsuffering - patience
- James 2:17, 18 faith alone without works is dead
- James and Paul are talking the same thing
- faith-no works (it is not)
- works-by faith (faith = faith)
- James 5:16 "Confess your faults one to another, and pray for another that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteos man availeth much." (righteous man)
- application: walk the walk not just talk the talk = walk the talk
- believe - one God James 2:19 " Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe and tremble."
- Ephesians 2:10 "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."
